Kronos Fusion Energy announced its S.M.A.R.T. 40 commercialization strategy on Monday, with a stated goal of mass-producing fusion energy generators by 2036. The company's approach centers on its S.M.A.R.T. (Superconducting Minimum-Aspect-Ratio Torus) system, which utilizes aneutronic fuels such as deuterium and helium-3.
This system is designed to enable continuous operation and reduce reactor damage, thereby increasing the efficiency of energy generation. Fusion energy is being pursued as an alternative to traditional energy sources that face limitations and environmental concerns.
The company is also exploring an accelerator-driven system (ADS) for the sustainable mass production of tritium, a critical component for fusion energy generators. The ADS design combines a particle accelerator with a subcritical nuclear reactor core to produce significant quantities of tritium without generating long-lived radioactive waste.
