KTGY Designs Revitalized Jordan Downs Communities in Los Angeles

Architecture firm KTGY has played a key role in the revitalization of the historic Jordan Downs area in Los Angeles, California, through its design of the Kalmia Rose and Cypress View residential complexes. These projects are part of a larger initiative to transform the neighborhood into a safe and interconnected urban village.

The Jordan Downs site has a long history, originally built as workforce housing during World War II. Over time, the area fell into disrepair, prompting the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) to launch an ambitious revitalization plan in 2010. A key component of this plan was a "build first" strategy, ensuring residents had housing in new developments before older structures were removed.

KTGY's designers engaged with community members to understand the neighborhood's specific needs and desires. This feedback guided the design of Kalmia Rose and Cypress View, with a focus on fostering connectivity and safety. The buildings are centered around a new public park, featuring pedestrian-friendly circulation and amenities designed to enhance community interaction.

The redevelopment aims to create a stronger sense of unity and improve resident well-being. Design choices, such as sightlines from private balconies to shared amenities and the public park, enhance feelings of security and encourage neighborly connections. The reborn Jordan Downs now offers a mix of housing, retail, public parks, and recreational facilities.
