Kuwait Procures Rheinmetall's MASS Ship Protection Systems

German technology group Rheinmetall has secured an order to supply its MASS (Multi Ammunition Softkill) ship protection systems to the Kuwaiti Naval Forces. This marks the first delivery of the decoy launcher system to Kuwait, with eight vessels, specifically Al Dorra-class guided-missile boats, slated for equipment.

The total contract value is in the low double-digit million-euro range, including the associated Omnitrap ammunition. This significant procurement is part of Kuwait's largest shipbuilding program in over 15 years. The order was booked by Rheinmetall in the second quarter of 2026, with deliveries scheduled to commence in the same quarter and conclude three years later.

The Al Dorra-class vessels are being built by Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding for the EDGE Group and are described as versatile, open-sea stealth patrol vessels. The order includes the latest generation of Omnitrap-ER decoy ammunition, featuring extended range and improved trajectory for countering advanced radar and infrared-guided threats.

The MASS system provides protection against various threats, including anti-ship missiles and laser-guided weapons. It deploys multispectral decoys covering radar, infrared, and electro-optical sensors. Its modular design allows for easy integration onto vessels of all sizes, from patrol boats to frigates, and can operate either integrated with existing combat management systems or as a standalone unit.
