La Romaine-2 Substation Connects Hydroelectric Plants
EXP, SYSTRA Canada, and Egis in Canada have designed the La Romaine-2 substation, which connects hydroelectric plants along the Romaine River in Quebec's remote region.

The La Romaine-2 substation, located in the remote Basse-Côte-Nord region of Quebec, has been completed. The project was designed and executed by EXP, in collaboration with SYSTRA Canada and Egis in Canada. This major transmission substation connects the La Romaine-1, La Romaine-2, and La Romaine-3 hydroelectric power plants to the Arnaud substation, situated near the Sept-Îles and Petit-Mécatina complexes.
The design scope included control and protection systems, detailed installation plans for structures and electromechanical systems, high-voltage electrical installations, and auxiliary service facilities. A key challenge for the project was its isolated location, situated 200 kilometers from the nearest city, Sept-Îles.
To address the difficulties posed by the site's remoteness, the project team employed strategies including a 3D environment and scatter plot diagrams to enhance the design process. The scope of work also encompassed civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and instrumentation and controls services.
The completion of the La Romaine-2 substation represents a significant addition to Quebec's power transmission infrastructure, facilitating the integration of hydroelectric power generated from the Romaine River complex into the broader electrical grid.
