Laika completes production on stop-motion feature Wildwood

Laika has reached a new production milestone with the completion of its latest feature, Wildwood. The project highlights the studio’s ongoing commitment to the labor-intensive stop-motion animation medium, a technique it has refined over two decades of operation.

Cinematographer Caleb Deschanel, whose credits include The Passion of the Christ and The Patriot, served as the director of photography for the film. Deschanel noted that while he was aware of the complex nature of the medium, the sheer volume of manual work required to execute stop-motion sequences proved more extensive than his previous experience in traditional film.

In an industry increasingly dominated by digital effects, Laika continues to differentiate itself through the use of physical puppets and practical sets. This approach requires significant time investments per project but serves as the studio's primary market differentiator. The completion of Wildwood follows the studio's historical focus on high-fidelity, hand-crafted visual storytelling.
