Italian luxury automaker Lamborghini has confirmed that its first purely electric vehicle, initially slated to be the Lanzador, will be delayed until 2030 or later and will instead feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The company stated that customers show little willingness to purchase electric cars and that the current technology is not yet sufficiently mature.

The Lanzador concept was unveiled in 2023 as a 2+2 electric luxury grand tourer, intended to establish Lamborghini's fourth product line and serve as its inaugural EV. However, these initial plans have now been significantly altered.

The production version of the Lanzador will adopt a plug-in hybrid system. It is expected to utilize a derivative of the 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo plug-in hybrid powertrain found in the Urus, with a market launch potentially coming in the late 2020s.

This marks the third time Lamborghini has revised its plans for the Lanzador. Previously, CEO Stephan Winkelmann suggested market acceptance for EVs was plateauing, and developing EVs was an "expensive hobby." The latest justification, however, directly questions the viability of EVs themselves. A company representative stated that while EVs can offer precision and power, they lack "emotion." Research and development into electric technologies, including battery chemistry and software, are reportedly continuing behind the scenes.
