Lantmännen opens new wheat protein plant in Norrköping

Lantmännen Biorefineries has commenced operations at its new production facility in Norrköping, Sweden, dedicated to the extraction of wheat protein, or gluten. The project represents an investment of 800 million SEK aimed at significantly expanding the company’s manufacturing capacity.

The new plant processes wheat sourced directly from the cooperative’s member farmers. By bypassing intermediaries, the company aims to maintain consistent quality while ensuring supply chain robustness for the growing plant-based protein market.

Group President and CEO Magnus Kagevik stated that the investment strengthens the domestic food supply chain and expands international export capabilities. The expansion has also created approximately 30 new jobs in the region.

Lars-Gunnar Edh, head of the company's Energy division, noted that demand for Swedish wheat protein is high across both national and global markets. The opening marks a significant milestone in Lantmännen's integrated business model, which covers the entire chain from field to fork.
