Laser Components Germany GmbH has published a technical comparison examining two green light laser technologies: directly emitting 520 nm laser diodes and 532 nm diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers. The company positions the 520 nm laser diodes as an alternative to DPSS lasers, which have been integrated into its FLEXPOINT® modules for many years.

While DPSS lasers have evolved to become stable and suitable for various industrial and medical applications, the new laser diode technology offers distinct advantages. Key differentiating factors include a broader operating temperature range (-20°C to +60°C for laser diodes versus approximately -5°C to +50°C for current DPSS versions) and improved power stability, with laser diodes achieving less than 2% fluctuation compared to DPSS lasers' under 5%, facilitated by integrated monitoring diodes and the company's digital control.

Beam profile characteristics also differ; DPSS lasers typically produce a uniform, round beam with Gaussian distribution, whereas laser diodes emit an elliptical beam better suited for line generation. For miniaturization, laser diodes are significantly advantageous, fitting into modules as small as 11.5 mm in diameter, unlike the larger housings required for DPSS lasers.

Laser Components also notes a significant price reduction in 520 nm laser diodes, which are now more cost-effective than DPSS lasers above 10 mW. Costs are expected to continue falling, making them an increasingly attractive option for applications prioritizing the high visibility of green light.
