LBV launches blog on Bearded Vulture reintroduction in Bavaria

The Bavarian Association for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV) has launched a dedicated blog to report on its ongoing project to reintroduce the Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) in the Bavarian Alps. The blog offers insights into the various stages of the reintroduction program, managed by LBV biologists Toni Wegscheider and David Schuhwerk.

Recent posts detail critical events, including the discovery of six dead Egyptian Vultures in Austria, suspected to be victims of the banned pesticide Carbofuran. The blog also covers preparations for the release site in Berchtesgaden National Park and introduces a new young Bearded Vulture arriving from France. The project is set to continue its success with the planned release of two more young Bearded Vultures in the summer of 2026, marking the sixth year of this ambitious conservation initiative.

The project aims to re-establish the Bearded Vulture, Europe's largest bird of prey, in Bavaria, where it was driven to extinction over a century ago due to hunting and poisoning. The blog serves as a crucial platform for sharing field updates and raising awareness about the challenges and importance of restoring this magnificent species to its natural habitat.
