Legal Tech Funding Sees Slight Dip From All-Time Highs

Venture capital funding for legal tech startups has experienced a slight decline from its previous record highs, yet the sector continues to show robust growth. Over the past two years, investors have poured more than $7 billion into legal and legal tech startups, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence (AI). Last year marked a record for the industry, with $4.6 billion invested, and the first half of this year has already seen over $2.2 billion raised.

The largest funding rounds have recently concentrated on established players. Harvey, an AI tools provider for legal professionals, leads the sector in fundraising, having secured over $1 billion. Swedish startup Legora, an AI platform for lawyers, has also raised a substantial $600 million in Series D funding. Clio, a provider of legal practice management software that has heavily invested in AI, has also attracted growth capital.

Acquisition activity within the sector remains vibrant. Legora has been an active acquirer, purchasing at least five startups this year. Harvey has also made multiple acquisitions. Among publicly traded acquirers, Dutch company Wolters Kluwer has completed two significant acquisitions in the legal tech space.

AI is expected to significantly transform the legal industry. Surveys indicate that a majority of legal professionals believe AI will have a substantial impact on their work within the next five years. Key benefits are anticipated in automating routine tasks and saving time, although this may affect traditional billing models.
