Lego Begins Construction of Largest Solar Park in Billund

The Lego Group has begun construction of its largest solar park to date in Billund, Denmark, as part of its global investment in renewable energy. When completed, the site is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to match 100% of the company’s total electricity consumption in Billund.

The solar park will have an installed capacity of 116 MW with a grid connection of 80 MW peak. It is expected to generate approximately 99 GWh of renewable electricity annually, with operations planned to begin in late 2027. This investment is a component of the LEGO Group's target to achieve Net-Zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2050.

"The Billund solar park is an important milestone towards our ambition to expand our renewable energy capacity globally and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions," said Annette Stube, Chief Sustainability Officer at the LEGO Group. "At the same time, it has been thoughtfully designed to support local biodiversity and provide a welcoming space for the community to enjoy."

The solar park design emphasizes nature protection. The site will include 65 hectares of solar panels surrounded by plants to minimize visual impact, while the remaining 35 hectares are dedicated to natural habitats, wetlands, and open landscapes, including water holes, designed to support local wildlife. Bat habitats and nesting boxes have been installed across the site.

Surrounding nature areas will be open to the public, creating new recreational and educational spaces. A network of paths and boardwalks will allow visitors to explore and learn more about local biodiversity. An existing transformer tower will be restored and repurposed as a small museum space.
