LEGO Celebrates 90 Years Emphasizing Play's Importance
This summer, LEGO Group celebrates 90 years of creativity and play. The new LEGO Play Well Study highlights play as fundamental to the well-being and happiness of families.

In May 2022, toy company LEGO Group is celebrating its 90th anniversary in Billund, Denmark. The company originated in 1932 with wooden toys and has since grown into one of the world's largest toy manufacturers.
The iconic LEGO brick was patented 26 years after the company's founding and has since become the basis for over 18,000 LEGO products. The company emphasizes the fundamental role of play in children's development, happiness, and overall family well-being.
The LEGO Play Well Study surveyed over 55,000 parents and children in more than 30 countries. Findings indicate that nearly all parents (93–92%) believe children enhance their creativity, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities through play. Children reported that playing together as a family makes them happy (97%) and helps them relax.
LEGO Group remains family-owned, with Chairman Thomas Kirk Kristiansen noting his great-grandfather founded the company recognizing play's power to unite families and foster children's potential. The company also directs 25 percent of its profits to the LEGO Foundation, supporting play and learning for children in disadvantaged and crisis-affected regions.
Throughout its anniversary year, LEGO Group is hosting various activities to celebrate fan creativity and the enduring impact of play.
