LEGO System in Play transformed the toy industry

Danish toy manufacturer LEGO transformed the toy industry in the 1950s with the introduction of its "System in Play" concept. The core idea was to create a unified system where all bricks and components would fit together, allowing for limitless building possibilities.

The concept originated from discussions Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, then owner of LEGO, had in 1954. Observing a lack of system in the toy business, he recognized the potential of LEGO's plastic bricks to foster a cohesive play experience that stimulated children's imagination and creativity.

"System in Play" officially launched in 1955 with the "Town Plan" series, designed to enable the creation of realistic urban environments. The system's key principles included universal compatibility, versatility, and durability, ensuring that bricks bought at any time would work together.

This system, along with the crucial stud and tube coupling principle introduced in 1958, became fundamental to the LEGO brand. The decision in 1960 to cease wooden toy production and fully commit to the LEGO brick system set the company on its path to global success.
