Leo Cancer Care to Enhance Pediatric Radiation Therapy Experience

Leo Cancer Care has announced plans to further invest in the treatment experience for children undergoing radiation therapy. The company has developed a dedicated pediatric program that combines education, distraction, and gamification, following the world's first pediatric treatments using its Marie® upright positioning and imaging platform.

In June 2026, Stanford Medicine conducted the initial pediatric treatments utilizing the Mevion S250-FIT Proton Therapy System, which incorporates Leo Cancer Care's Marie® solution. These early treatments demonstrated the feasibility of upright pediatric proton therapy across a wide age range, while also confirming the continued availability of anesthesia when clinically indicated.

The company's approach reconfigures traditional radiotherapy by keeping the radiation beam fixed and rotating the patient, seated or semi-standing, into treatment positions. Leo Cancer Care posits that an upright posture may help reduce fear and foster a sense of control for child patients.

The new program includes an augmented reality educational tool, a Leo the Lion plush toy, and a storybook. Additionally, the AVATAR system provides immersive distraction during treatment, potentially reducing the need for anesthesia. Leo Cancer Care has also contributed to a research report outlining the rationale and safety considerations for upright radiotherapy in pediatric oncology.
