Levi's Missed Key Jeans Trend as Gap Collaboration Sold Out

Levi Strauss & Co. reported slower direct-to-consumer growth in its third quarter, attributing it partly to a misjudgment of the season's dominant denim trend. While Levi's focused on baggy styles, Gap's collaboration featuring low-rise options sold out rapidly.

Levi's Missed Key Jeans Trend as Gap Collaboration Sold Out

Levi Strauss & Co. experienced a significant slowdown in its direct-to-consumer (DTC) revenue growth during the third quarter, posting a 2 percent increase compared to 11 percent in the prior quarter. CEO Michelle Gass cited softer traffic trends in the U.S. and Europe as primary drivers for the deceleration.

The company's fall marketing campaign, "Keep It Loose," heavily promoted baggy jean styles. However, Gass acknowledged that market excitement and energy were more focused on low-rise denim, a trend Levi's had underestimated. This strategic misstep impacted performance in key markets.

In contrast, Gap successfully capitalized on consumer demand by launching a collaboration with Hailey Bieber in July. This collection included both "Extra Baggy" and "90’s Low Rise Loose" jeans, which reportedly sold out within minutes. This highlights a divergence in trend prediction and market response between the two denim retailers.

Despite the setback, Levi's has raised its full-year outlook. The company now anticipates at least mid-single-digit DTC growth in the fourth quarter and high-single-digit growth for the full year. Investors will be closely watching to see if Levi's can meet these projections and demonstrate that the missed trend was an isolated incident rather than a flaw in its strategic approach.
