Levi's Recreates Rare 1942 501 Jeans Model
Levi's Vintage Clothing (LVC) has produced an exact replica of the 1942 501 jeans. A limited run of 800 pairs sold out quickly after their August 13 release.

Levi's Vintage Clothing (LVC) has released a reproduction of one of the rarest versions of its iconic 501 jeans: the 1942 model. This particular iteration marks a short but significant period in the brand's history, coinciding with America's entry into World War II, when wartime rationing led to fundamental changes in jean construction.
The LVC recreation is a meticulous copy, mirroring the original in denim weight, stitching, and rivets. Only 800 pairs of the limited-edition jeans, priced at $295, were made and they sold out online shortly after their August 13 debut. The LVC team consulted Levi's archives and analyzed an authentic 1942 pair to ensure historical accuracy.
Levi's Vintage Clothing originated as a concept in 1996 to reproduce archival pieces. It has since evolved into a dedicated team focused on translating the brand's history into wearable items. Design Director Paul O’Neill stated that each LVC piece begins with a visit to Levi's San Francisco archives, housing thousands of original garments dating back to 1873.
O'Neill described the 1942 501 as a transitional model. It retained 1930s features like the cinch-back and crotch rivet, while introducing the heavier denim that became standard in the 1940s. The subsequent wartime rationing significantly altered the 501 design, making this specific version historically rare and noteworthy.
