LG Acquires Athom to Advance AI-Enabled Intelligent Space Business
LG Electronics has acquired a majority stake in Dutch smart home company Athom to enhance its connectivity within open smart home ecosystems. The move aims to accelerate LG's AI-driven home innovation.

LG Electronics has acquired an 80 percent stake in Athom, a smart home platform company based in the Netherlands, with plans to purchase the remaining 20 percent within three years. This strategic acquisition is intended to bolster LG's capabilities in open smart home ecosystems and advance its AI-enabled intelligent space business.
The integration will connect Athom's extensive device connectivity, linking thousands of appliances, sensors, and lighting devices, with LG's generative AI-enabled ThinQ platform. This combination seeks to create an AI home that better understands customer needs and provides optimized space solutions, using generative AI to manage devices and create personalized environments.
Founded in 2014, Athom offers the smart home hub 'Homey,' which connects various home appliances and IoT devices, supported by cloud subscription services. 'Homey' has cultivated a significant user base, primarily in Europe, with availability expanding to Australia, Singapore, the US, and Canada.
LG plans to leverage this acquisition to extend its differentiated AI home customer experience to other spaces, including commercial environments and mobility settings, thereby advancing the concept of an 'Intelligent Space'.
