LG Display Aims for 2029 Mass Production with New OLED Technology
LG Display has set a target for mass production of its FLiPP OLED technology by 2029. The new manufacturing process is reportedly aimed at securing orders for Apple's future Studio Display.
LG Display has announced its objective to achieve mass production of its FLiPP (Fine Line Lithography Process) technology by 2029. This advanced manufacturing technique for light-emitting pixels aims to address challenges faced by OLED displays using the traditional FMM (Fine Metal Mask) process in the IT device market.
Industry analysts suggest that LG Display's new technological target is likely linked to anticipated orders from Apple. Estimates indicate that Apple could release its first OLED Studio Display monitor between 2029 and 2030. LG Display has previously stated that the FLiPP process could yield 24 units of 27-inch OLED panels from a single 8.5-generation substrate, matching the estimated size for Apple's Studio Display.
The conventional FMM process presents significant technical and cost-related hurdles, making widespread adoption in the IT OLED market difficult. LG Display's FLiPP technology is currently in the research and development phase, aiming to offer a more competitive solution. However, the company has emphasized that final production plans have not yet been confirmed.
LG Display's focus on novel production techniques underscores its strategy to enhance its standing in the competitive IT display sector. Successful implementation of the FLiPP technology could open new avenues for collaboration with major technology firms.
