LG Electronics reports over 90 million direct drive motors supplied

LG Electronics announced it has supplied more than 90 million direct drive BLDC motors for washing machines worldwide as of December 2020. The company first introduced its direct drive technology in 1998.

The LG direct drive motor is an outer rotor BLDC motor directly connected to the washing machine tub, omitting the need for belts or pulleys. This simplified structure reduces wear-and-tear components, enhancing the machine's reliability and durability. LG states this design also contributes to quieter and more stable operation.

According to LG, the direct drive technology improves energy efficiency by delivering more power to the tub and allows for precise control, leading to enhanced washing performance. By minimizing moving parts, the direct drive system increases the motor's lifespan.
