LG TVs Under Scrutiny for Scanning Network Devices When Off
LG televisions are facing scrutiny following a video that appears to show the devices scanning local networks for other devices, even when powered off.
LG televisions are under examination after a video surfaced suggesting the devices may scan local networks for other hardware, even when turned off. YouTube channels Gamers Nexus and Level1Techs collaborated with security researchers to analyze LG TVs' tracking capabilities.
The analysis, which includes packet captures, indicates that LG TVs, including the G5 OLED model, actively scan the Local Area Network (LAN) for other devices. Steve Burke, editor-in-chief at Gamers Nexus, stated, “The [G5] crawled our entire network and found dozens of unrelated devices, including smartwatches and phones of our staff who didn't even know we were working on this.”
This discovery raises concerns about user privacy and data collection practices. The apparent network scanning activity while the TV is in an off state suggests potential for unauthorized monitoring of connected devices and network activity.
LG has not yet issued an official statement regarding these findings. This situation highlights broader concerns regarding data handling and transparency in smart televisions and other connected home devices.
