Li Auto updates i6 electric SUV to compete in crowded Chinese market

Li Auto debuted the 2026 version of its i6 SUV on Wednesday, marking the first major update to the model since its introduction. Priced from 249,800 RMB ($37,500), the vehicle aims to capture market share through technical refinement rather than price reductions, a common tactic in the saturated Chinese new energy vehicle market.

A core feature of the update is the new 96 kWh Lishan 5C battery, which increases the CLTC-rated range for the rear-wheel-drive model to 780 km. The company emphasizes that the improvement stems from tighter integration between the battery, motor, and electronic control systems, intended to enhance real-world energy efficiency.

The 2026 i6 also upgrades its intelligent cockpit, incorporating the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 chip and a 29-inch 6K panoramic display. Improvements to the driver-assistance software aim to assist with complex traffic and parking, though some advanced hardware features remain optional upgrades.

By adding features to the base model, Li Auto is attempting to streamline purchasing for consumers while maintaining its presence in the mid-range SUV segment. The company's long-term success will rely on its ability to manage production costs while delivering consistent performance in a market that is increasingly prioritizing user experience over mere technical specifications.
