Charlie Bailey, a librarian in South Philadelphia, explained the workshops stemmed from an observation of people feeling AI tools are being introduced into their lives without consent. "The inspiration was the feeling of people's frustration with AI tools we didn't ask for suddenly being everywhere in our lives," Bailey stated.
The workshops cover practical steps attendees can take to limit AI data collection and functionalities on devices like smartphones. The goal is not complete technological isolation, but rather to foster awareness and provide consumers with a sense of control. This initiative taps into broader societal discussions about data privacy and the power of technology corporations.
