Lifestyle Program Improves Brain Health in Older Adults Across Latin America

Findings from the LatAm-FINGERS study, funded by the Alzheimer's Association, indicate that culturally adapted lifestyle interventions successfully improved memory, thinking, and overall cognitive function in older adults at risk for dementia across 11 Latin American countries. The two-year study reinforces earlier results from the U.S. POINTER trial, highlighting the effectiveness of multidomain lifestyle changes for brain health.

The research focused on dementia risk reduction strategies, revealing that structured guidance, coaching, and peer support led to significantly greater cognitive improvements compared to self-guided approaches. The findings were simultaneously published in The Lancet, a leading medical journal.

A key aspect of the LatAm-FINGERS study involved tailoring the programs to local cultures, dietary habits, and environmental conditions. Physical activity components included culturally relevant exercises like salsa and tango, while nutrition advice incorporated locally available healthy ingredients. Study materials were translated and culturally adapted, with support provided for participants less familiar with digital technology.

The study encompassed a diverse range of racial and ethnic backgrounds, as well as varying educational and socioeconomic statuses. This demonstrates the potential for improving brain health across different communities, cultures, and resource levels. The results provide strong evidence for the global adaptability of the U.S. POINTER model in reducing dementia risk.
