LineageOS introduces web-based installer and begins Android 17 development
Custom Android ROM LineageOS has announced a summer update featuring a web-based installation tool, simplifying the process for users. Development for the next version, LineageOS 24, based on Android 17, is also underway.

Custom Android ROM developer LineageOS has announced a series of significant updates aimed at simplifying both installation and daily use. The latest 'summer update' introduces several new features, including a web-based installation tool and prepares for the next major version based on Android 17.
The most notable addition is a web-based installer that allows users to flash LineageOS directly from their browser via the project's download page. This tool supports protocols such as Fastboot and ADB, and is also compatible with Samsung's Odin flashing protocol. However, LineageOS stresses that this tool does not entirely replace the traditional installation process, and users are still advised to consult device-specific instructions on the LineageOS wiki.
The LineageOS Updater application has been completely redesigned with a Material 3 Expressive design. Beyond the visual overhaul, it now clearly displays the Android security bulletin level included in each update package before installation, helping users identify what security patches are being applied. Additionally, A/B OTA updates now use streaming installation by default, reducing storage requirements and speeding up the update process.
The development team also confirmed that work on LineageOS 24, based on Android 17, has officially begun. While no timeline has been provided, the team reports that development is progressing well. LineageOS has also expanded its device support, adding multiple devices from manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola, Sony, and Xiaomi.
