Lingnan University's history began in Guangzhou in 1888 as the College of Arts and Sciences, founded by American Presbyterians. The institution was renamed Canton Christian College in 1903 and relocated to its permanent campus in Kangle Village, Guangzhou, in 1904.

The college grew into a significant educational institution in Southern China. By 1918, it offered full university courses and awarded degrees. Many leading universities in the US and Canada accepted Lingnan graduates for postgraduate studies. In 1927, the institution was officially renamed Lingnan University, with Chinese leadership, and expanded its offerings to include agriculture, commerce, engineering, and medicine.

During World War II, the university experienced multiple relocations. It moved to Hong Kong in 1938 and later evacuated inland due to wartime conflict. Following the war's end in 1945, Lingnan University returned to Guangzhou. However, in 1952, it was dissolved as part of a national restructuring of higher education institutions in China.

The university's presence was re-established in Hong Kong in 1967 when alumni founded Lingnan College. This marked the initial step toward the university's revival. In 1969, Lingnan College merged with other educational entities to form the Lingnan Education Institution Limited, continuing the mission of higher education in Hong Kong.
