Lingnan University Revises English Language Graduation Requirement

Lingnan University has revised its English language graduation requirement for undergraduate students. Students must now complete and pass all required English language courses instead of relying on external testing.

18 October 2026

Lingnan University in Hong Kong has announced a revision to its English language graduation requirement for undergraduate students. Effective immediately, students are now mandated to complete and pass all required English language courses to fulfill their graduation criteria, moving away from the previous reliance on external testing compliance.

The university stated that the revision aims to enhance students' English proficiency throughout their academic journey, ensuring they are better prepared for further studies and the job market post-graduation. A university spokesperson indicated that Lingnan has consistently prioritized English language skills, regularly reviewing and improving its curricula and requirements to meet student needs.

Under the new arrangement, the university will continue to develop students' language skills through credit-bearing courses. The Centre for English and Additional Languages (CEAL) has also introduced a new English Language Enhancement Course (LUE3009) this academic year to provide supplementary support for students needing to improve their English.

The university's English Language Enhancement (ELE) Curriculum categorizes students based on their proficiency upon admission, including university English courses, electives, and discipline-specific professional communication courses. Lingnan University asserts that these changes will optimize teaching resources and strengthen support for student language learning.
