Researchers from Lingnan University's Department of Psychology have found that employees who are proactive in seeking resources and eager to learn, combined with high emotional intelligence, perform significantly better in their roles.

The study, led by Professor Wang Huatian and published in the Journal of Business and Psychology, tracked 368 hospital staff in mainland China. It revealed that particularly those in lower hierarchical positions benefited from proactivity. Higher emotional intelligence facilitated their ability to acquire necessary resources and guidance more effectively.

"Employees in a 'disadvantaged' position can transform their situation into learning resources by leveraging proactivity and high emotional intelligence," Professor Wang explained. This approach can accelerate their growth, experience accumulation, and network expansion.

The findings are applicable to various workplaces, including Hong Kong's diverse and competitive sectors where hierarchy and efficiency are crucial. Proactivity, continuous learning, and the ability to understand others' emotions are key to career advancement.

The researchers recommend that corporate managers encourage junior employees to seek advice and incorporate emotional intelligence training into staff development programs.
