Lingnan University's History and Development Revealed

Lingnan University's history began in 1888 when American Presbyterians established Christian College in Guangzhou. Initially known as "Gexhi Academy," the institution underwent name changes and relocations due to political unrest in early 20th century China. It officially became known as "Lingnan" in 1903 and was formally recognized as Lingnan University in 1927, operating as an international, private Christian university.

By 1918, Lingnan had developed a full university curriculum and began awarding degrees. Its graduates were accepted into postgraduate programs at 15 prominent universities in the United States and Canada. The university expanded significantly, adding faculties such as agriculture, commerce, engineering, and medicine, and also established a branch campus in Hong Kong, becoming a key educational institution in southern China.

During the Sino-Japanese War (1938-1944), Lingnan University was forced to relocate multiple times. It moved from Guangzhou to Hong Kong, then to northern Guangdong, and finally to eastern Guangdong. After the war ended in 1945, the university returned to its Guangzhou campus and underwent reconstruction.

In late 1952, as part of a national restructuring of higher education institutions, Lingnan University was dissolved. Its Guangzhou campus became part of Sun Yat-sen University, and its departments were integrated into other local institutions, marking the end of its initial 60-year period of operation.

The university was re-established in Hong Kong in 1967 as Lingnan College, a significant step toward reviving its legacy. This initiative was driven by alumni who aimed to continue Lingnan's educational tradition. Lingnan College eventually evolved into the independent Lingnan University that exists today.
