Linux kernel developer Linus Torvalds released the test version Linux 7.3-rc6 on October 4. Following an unusually large number of code changes the previous week, development has returned to normal, with driver fixes once again constituting the majority of changes.

Torvalds noted that AI and large language models (LLM) are now part of the Linux kernel development cycle, establishing a new "AI normal." This involves an increase in small bug fixes identified or assisted by AI tools.

In addition to driver fixes, Linux 7.3-rc6 includes architecture updates, primarily related to KVM, and core network code fixes. File system work has focused on the SMB client. Hardware support has been added for the Turtle Beach VelocityOne Race steering wheel and pedals.

Development is proceeding on schedule, with the stable version of Linux 7.3 expected to launch in mid-October. This release date is also significant for the upcoming Ubuntu 26.10, which targets Linux 7.3 for its kernel.
