Linux mobile OS postmarketOS renamed Nura

The Linux-based mobile operating system postmarketOS has officially been renamed Nura. The new name, inspired by ancient Nuraghe stone structures on Sardinia, emphasizes the project's commitment to extending the usable life of smartphones and reducing electronic waste.

Originally launched in 2017, postmarketOS aimed to enable smartphones to last for 10 years by providing long-term software support, even after manufacturers cease updates. The development team found the original name difficult to explain to new users and prone to pronunciation and memorization issues across different languages.

The capitalization of "postmarketOS" also caused confusion, and the name's relevance diminished as devices like the PinePhone began shipping with the system pre-installed. The team sought a simpler, more distinctive, and trademarkable name for over 18 months.

The name Nura, proposed by community member Davide Depau, evokes longevity, similar to the millennia-old nuraghe structures. A trademark application for the name has been filed. The project's website has been updated to nura.eco, and the logo has undergone minor adjustments.

Despite the name change, Nura continues postmarketOS's core philosophy: to promote device longevity and sustainability through open-source software and continuous development.
