Lithium battery pretreatment market grows with increased battery recycling
The global market for lithium battery pretreatment is expanding due to rising electric vehicle production and battery recycling activities. The report highlights demand for critical mineral recovery.

The global market for lithium battery pretreatment is strengthening, driven by increasing electric vehicle production and a rise in battery recycling efforts.
According to an analysis by DataM Intelligence, the growing volume of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries is a significant factor propelling the market forward. This, combined with increased investments in battery recycling, is creating demand for advanced pretreatment processes. These include battery discharge, dismantling, shredding, and the production of black mass.
The report indicates that the Asia-Pacific region is already the leading market. This is attributed to the region's substantial battery manufacturing capacity and robust recycling infrastructure. China, in particular, dominates this sector, accounting for over 70% of global lithium-ion battery manufacturing capacity.
The expansion of electric vehicle production and the construction of new battery gigafactories are generating substantial amounts of scrap material from battery manufacturing and defective units. This ensures a consistent demand for pretreatment services. Additionally, tightening environmental regulations and the principles of a circular economy are guiding manufacturers toward efficient methods for recovering valuable metals such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt.
The research identifies that semi-automated pretreatment processes dominated the market in 2025, holding over a 51% market share. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries accounted for nearly 50% of the total demand for electric vehicle batteries, a notable increase from previous years.
