Lithium Harvest Holding A/S, based in Denmark, has entered into a letter of intent with a geothermal development partner to form a joint venture for an integrated geothermal power and lithium production facility in Alberta, Canada. At full nameplate capacity, the planned facility targets the annual production of approximately 0.67 terawatt-hours (TWh) of renewable electricity and 28,500 tonnes of lithium carbonate.

The project is slated for an initial production start in 2028, with full capacity anticipated through phased construction and ramp-up. The joint venture will leverage the same geothermal resource for both electricity generation and lithium extraction, expanding Lithium Harvest's North American development portfolio. The company stated the integrated approach aims to improve resource utilization and bolster North America's lithium supply chain.

The geothermal development partner will contribute expertise in geothermal energy development, while Lithium Harvest will provide its integrated brine-to-battery-grade lithium platform, incorporating water treatment and proprietary Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology. Geothermal heat will power electricity generation, and the geothermal brine will serve as the feedstock for lithium extraction and refining.

Key next steps include finalizing joint venture arrangements, technical validation of the geothermal resource and lithium extraction process, advancing engineering and permitting, and securing project financing. The project also presents a potential for significant carbon emission reductions, estimated at up to 933,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually at full operational capacity.
