L&L Hawaiian Barbecue Expands to Canada with 5-Unit Franchise Agreement

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, the Hawaii-based restaurant chain recognized for its signature "plate lunch" offerings, is set to launch its first Canadian locations in 2027 through a franchise agreement for five units. The expansion into Canada marks a significant step for the company, which operates over 240 restaurants across the U.S. and Japan.

The initial Canadian restaurant will open in Edmonton, Alberta, following a five-unit franchise deal with local entity Edmonton Ice District Ltd. This move also signals the company's broader franchise growth strategy, as it actively seeks partners for new markets within the United States.

"This milestone expansion reflects our confidence in bringing our aloha spirit and made-to-order comfort food of Hawai'i to new international markets," stated Elisia Flores, CEO of L&L Hawaiian Barbecue. Flores emphasized the role of franchisees who understand local communities in the brand's expansion efforts.

Founded in Honolulu in 1952, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue has grown from a local eatery into an international brand. The company entered the continental U.S. market in 1999 and is known for popular dishes such as BBQ Chicken, Loco Moco, and SPAM® Musubi.
