A collaborative project between LMIS AG and Orbis Will GmbH + Co. KG began in September, pooling their respective expertise.

The initiative aims to automate the optical quality control process for KNIPEX's VDE series handle sleeves using artificial intelligence (AI).

Currently, Orbis Will employees manually inspect each sleeve with a magnifying glass before dispatch. This new AI software project seeks to replace this labor-intensive and monotonous task, freeing up employees for other responsibilities and improving efficiency.

The project involves a team of AI and software developers from LMIS, alongside mechanical engineers and production management from Orbis Will. They are developing an AI-based visual inspection system designed to identify defects on the production line. Four cameras have been installed in the first injection molding machine to capture images of the sleeves as they are produced. The AI software will analyze these images to detect production errors such as scratches or contamination.

The primary challenge has been adapting a high-quality solution to the compact space within the machine. Project leader Ann-Christin Meisener highlighted the successful integration of competencies and the collaborative spirit of the team. Future applications may see this AI technology deployed for other customers' product lines.
