LMU Munich Confirms Status as University of Excellence
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) has once again reaffirmed its standing as a leading European research university within Germany's "Excellence Strategy."

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) has successfully retained its status as a University of Excellence, solidifying its position as one of Europe's foremost research institutions. This achievement, part of the German federal and state governments' "Excellence Strategy," ensures continued funding for the university.
LMU has been continuously funded under the Excellence Initiative since its inception in 2006, making it the most successful comprehensive university in Germany. University President Prof. Dr. Matthias H. Tschöp stated, "This is an important success for LMU and for Munich as a center of science and scholarship." He extended his thanks to the researchers and staff who contributed to this renewed distinction.
Bavaria's Minister of Science, Markus Blume, congratulated LMU, highlighting its exceptional academic strength and its role in setting national and European standards. He noted the university's impressive breadth of subjects combined with deep research, particularly at interdisciplinary interfaces, driving innovation and addressing significant contemporary questions.
Moving forward, LMU aims to sharpen its international profile by expanding its interdisciplinary strengths and collaborations with Technische Universität München and international partners. The university plans to attract top global talent and more effectively translate scientific discoveries into solutions for key societal challenges. The "Excellence" status is expected to provide momentum for these efforts.
A cornerstone of this success is LMU's acquisition of seven Clusters of Excellence, including one in the humanities, which the university plans to further bolster. LMU is sharpening its profile across six future-oriented fields: Digits and Data, Earth and Environment, Languages and Cultures, Life and Health, Physics, and Systems and Communities. Strategic investments in data science and artificial intelligence are planned to support this focus.
