LMU Munich Emphasizes Science's Societal Responsibility
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München celebrated its 554th anniversary on June 26, with President Matthias Tschöp focusing on the university's role in upholding democracy, freedom, and social cohesion.

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) celebrated its 554th anniversary on June 26. At the event, President Matthias Tschöp highlighted the university's responsibility in fostering democracy, freedom, and social cohesion.
Tschöp stated that a university's standing is not solely measured by research excellence, but also by its ability to enable truly free and outstanding science. He emphasized that science should not be confined to academic circles but should generate knowledge that saves lives, strengthens democracy, and contributes to understanding the world. LMU not only trains researchers but also thousands of professionals annually, including doctors, teachers, and lawyers, who shape society.
The President also addressed contemporary challenges, noting that global conflicts reach the university's gates. He cautioned against readily relinquishing scientific and freedom of opinion, while also stressing the importance of not giving free rein to activism or external influences that attack the values the Bavarian constitution was established to protect 80 years ago.
Tschöp underscored that the university must remain a place where the better argument prevails over loud slogans, and where hatred, xenophobia, racism, and other forms of misanthropy have no place. Simultaneously, open inquiry, even when uncomfortable, must be protected. He assured that LMU and its leadership are committed to doing everything in their power to meet these ideals.
The ceremony also highlighted the significance of science and research in Bavaria and Munich. Academics from LMU were honored for their societal contributions, a tradition at the university's anniversary.
