Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) has secured funding for seven research clusters for the next seven years, beginning January 2026. All seven clusters applied for by the university were approved.

München, May 22, 2025 – Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) has achieved a significant milestone within the federal and state "Exzellenzstrategie" initiative. All seven research clusters proposed by the university have been approved for continued funding over a seven-year period, commencing January 1, 2026.
New and Continued Research Projects
Four of the approved clusters will continue funding previously awarded in 2019. Additionally, three new research networks have received funding. These clusters represent LMU's internationally recognized top-tier research and focus on interdisciplinary topics relevant to contemporary societal challenges. Research areas span from systems neurology, nucleic acid research, energy conversion, bioengineering, and the development of the universe, to quantum sciences and cross-cultural philology.
University Leadership's Statement
LMU President Prof. Dr. Bernd Huber expressed satisfaction with the outcome. "We are delighted with this outstanding result in an extremely demanding competition. The approved clusters reflect the breadth of our university's expertise, from medicine, natural sciences, and life sciences to the humanities. This success impressively underscores our scientific excellence," Huber stated.
Future Outlook and Funding Status
With seven funded clusters, LMU now also meets the requirements to maintain its status as an "Exzellenzuniversität." An evaluation of the university's status is scheduled for later this year. LMU has been continuously funded since the inception of Germany's "Exzellenzwettbewerb" in 2006.
Bavarian Minister for Science's Comments
Bavarian Minister for Science, Markus Blume, highlighted Munich's position as a research hub. "These seven clusters strengthen Munich's standing as Germany's leading research center and set standards for innovation in Europe. LMU and TUM (Technical University of Munich) once again prove they are among Germany's top universities," Blume commented.
