LMU Munich Supports Academic Spin-off Companies

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) actively supports its researchers and students as they convert academic discoveries into spin-off companies. The university's Spin-off Service offers comprehensive assistance with the founding process, securing funding, and administrative matters.

One example is Tubulis GmbH, a biotech company founded in 2019 by LMU researchers Dr. Jonas Helma-Smets and Dr. Dominik Schumacher. The company specializes in developing unique antibody-drug conjugates and received significant support from LMU's Spin-off Service for funding and administrative guidance.

Christoph Zinser, Head of LMU's Spin-off Service, reports that over 100 spin-off companies have emerged from the university since 2010. These ventures stem from research and study, encompassing areas like innovative immunotherapies, a booking platform for boat moorings, and ultrasensitive microscopes developed in physics.

The service aids in technically validating ideas, navigating commercial aspects, and identifying suitable funding programs. Since 2010, LMU has secured 42 million euros in funding for its spin-offs from government and state programs. This funding aims to ease the transition from research to development.
