LMU Munich to launch new minor in Sustainability

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) will launch a new minor in Sustainability for its bachelor's students starting in the winter semester of 2026/27. This interdisciplinary program is designed to integrate sustainability topics across a wide range of academic fields.

The new minor, available in two ECTS options (30 or 60 credits), seeks to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of sustainability challenges. A key component of the program is practical learning through "Service Learning," where students engage in real-world projects with municipalities, NGOs, and social institutions.

Ralf Ludwig, LMU's Chief Sustainability Officer and head of the "el mundo" program, emphasized the necessity of embedding sustainability more broadly within university education. He noted significant student interest demonstrated through previous certificate programs, highlighting the potential of the minor to open career pathways in fields demanding sustainability expertise.

The program will draw from 16 departments across eight faculties and can be combined with 29 different bachelor's majors, ranging from geography to musicology. Instruction will be offered in both German and English. The curriculum will cover fundamental sustainability concepts, the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, and current debates on issues such as climate change, social inequality, and economic stability.
