LMU Researchers Identify Mechanisms of Molecular Plasmon Damping

Nanophysicists at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) München have identified two fundamental mechanisms governing chemical interface damping (CID) in metal nanostructures. The findings, published in Science Advances, provide new clarity on how adsorbed molecules influence the energy dissipation of plasmons, which are collective oscillations of free electrons.

The research team, led by Dr. Andrei Stefancu and Prof. Emiliano Cortés, distinguishes between resonant and non-resonant energy loss. In the first case, plasmon energy is transferred directly into unoccupied electronic states of a molecule. The second mechanism involves inelastic scattering at the metal-molecule interface, a process that is also shown to increase the electrical resistance of the metal surface.

By linking electrical surface phenomena with plasmonic energy transfer, the study demonstrates that energy flow between light, metal, and molecules can be manipulated through molecular design. This controllability is expected to aid the development of light-driven catalysis and sensor technologies.

The study was conducted as an international collaboration involving teams from Imperial College London, Universidad de La Laguna, and Rice University. The findings contribute to ongoing research in sustainable energy solutions, specifically for solar-driven chemical production.
