Local Journalism Faces Economic Pressure, Remains Crucial for Democracy

Local journalism is grappling with significant financial challenges as print newspaper circulation and advertising revenues decline sharply, particularly in northern Germany. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, for instance, circulations have dropped by over 10 percent within a year, while printing and distribution costs are on the rise.

Experts like Christian-Mathias Wellbrock from the Hamburg Media School state that local journalism has been under increasing economic pressure for decades. "Print publications have lost ad revenues, especially from classifieds, which have migrated online," Wellbrock told NDR Info. He also notes that societal polarization is making local work more difficult and dangerous.

Wellbrock also criticizes the media industry for being slow to initiate digital transformation. However, progress has been made in recent years, with media companies and publishers cooperating more to reduce costs, particularly in digital infrastructure.

For example, the Lüneburger Landeszeitung newspaper, serving the Nordostniedersachsen region, is pursuing an expansion strategy by acquiring the Winsener Anzeiger and merging the editorial teams of three publications. The paper aims to attract an aging readership and adapt its content to their needs, while contending with falling circulation and advertising income.
