London's Ultra Low Emission Zone Linked to Improved Children's Lung Growth
A five-year study has linked London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to improved lung development in children. Researchers observed significant catch-up growth in lung capacity among London children compared to previous findings.

A major five-year study has found a link between London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and improved lung growth in children. The research, published in The Lancet Public Health, tracked over 3,400 children in London and compared their lung development to children in Luton, a city without similar emission restrictions.
Previously, air pollution in London was associated with stunted lung development in children, increasing their risk for respiratory diseases. However, after five years of the ULEZ's implementation, researchers observed "astonishing" results: the lungs of children in London have shown catch-up growth, reaching the same lung capacity measurements as children in Luton. This coincides with a reduction in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels in London's air.
Lead investigator Professor Chris Griffiths from Queen Mary University of London described the findings as "jaw-dropping." While acknowledging the study is a "natural experiment" and cannot definitively prove causation, he highlighted the statistical significance and consistency with previous research on air quality improvements. The proportion of London children with clinically impaired lung function also saw a significant decrease.
Researchers suggest that reduced exposure to traffic-related air pollutants, particularly NO2, is a key factor. The study found that children in London experienced a faster and greater decrease in NO2 exposure compared to those in Luton. This reduction in pollution has been correlated with a greater annual increase in lung function (measured by FEV1) for London children.
The study underscores the public health benefits of clean air policies like ULEZ, particularly for child development. Despite improvements, London's air quality still does not meet World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, indicating the ongoing challenge of air pollution globally.
