Loviisa Nuclear Plant Begins Annual Maintenance and Modernization

Fortum's Loviisa nuclear power plant is set to begin its annual maintenance outage, with Unit 2 scheduled for shutdown on Sunday, August 2, 2026. Unit 1 will follow for its maintenance period, ensuring one reactor remains operational while the other undergoes servicing.

This year's outage for Unit 2 is a comprehensive, eight-year interval maintenance. During this period, the reactor fuel will be removed for detailed inspections of the reactor pressure vessel. A quarter of the fuel assemblies will be replaced, alongside extensive general maintenance and servicing tasks.

The plant aims to enhance safety and operational efficiency through these planned shutdowns. Major modernization projects are integrated into the maintenance schedule to upgrade key systems and components, extending the operational life of the facility.

Fortum operates two VVER-440 type reactors at the Loviisa site, located on the southern coast of Finland. The company has been investing in the long-term safety and reliability of its nuclear assets.
