This reduction in delay is key to unlocking the potential of new technologies such as autonomous vehicles and immersive virtual reality experiences.
Latency measures the time between sending information and receiving a response. For applications like remotely operated vehicles, this delay is critical; a difference of milliseconds can determine the outcome of an action. Current networks can have latency measured in hundreds of milliseconds, whereas 5G aims to reduce this to just a few milliseconds.
This significant reduction in delay enables a new class of applications requiring near-instantaneous responses. These include advanced multiplayer mobile gaming, real-time virtual and augmented reality, sophisticated factory automation, and the complex maneuvering required for self-driving cars. Autonomous vehicles, in particular, need to exchange information with each other and their environment in real-time to ensure safe operation.
Reply explains that 5G achieves low latency through multiple advancements, including optimized radio access and network architecture.
