Lower Saxony: Public Transport Strikes Again
The Verdi union is intensifying pressure in public transport wage negotiations. The strike affects several cities in Lower Saxony.
The Verdi trade union has again called for a strike by public transport employees in Lower Saxony. The work stoppage began on Thursday, May 21, and continues through Friday, May 22, causing significant disruptions for commuters in cities including Braunschweig, Wolfsburg, Hildesheim, Delmenhorst, and Lüchow.
The strike is part of ongoing efforts to pressure employers in unresolved wage negotiations. While agreements have been reached in most other German states, talks in Lower Saxony remain open. Verdi aims to increase pressure ahead of the next negotiation round scheduled for June 1.
These strikes specifically impact local public transport and do not affect Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) services, as the GDL union has reached an agreement with the railway company. Commuters affected by the local strikes are advised to allow extra travel time and consider alternatives such as bicycles, e-scooters, or rental cars.
Verdi's demands primarily concern better working conditions for nearly 100,000 public transport employees nationwide. These include shorter working hours, longer rest periods, and increased pay differentials for night and weekend work. The disruptions may lead to increased traffic congestion for drivers.
