Lufthansa updates baggage policies and fees
Lufthansa has revised its carry-on baggage rules, with the new Economy Basic fare excluding standard cabin trolleys from the ticket price.

Lufthansa’s baggage regulations are increasingly defined by the passenger's specific fare class. The most significant shift involves the Economy Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights, where passengers are restricted to a single small item measuring 40x30x15 cm to be stowed under the seat. A standard cabin trolley is no longer included in this base price and must be purchased as an add-on.
In higher fare classes, passengers typically retain the allowance of one piece of carry-on baggage (55x40x23 cm, max 8 kg) alongside a personal item. Business and First Class travelers continue to receive more flexible terms, including an allowance for two cabin bags. These adjustments reflect a broader industry move toward stricter unbundling of services.
Flightright experts note that pre-booking additional baggage via Lufthansa's website or app remains the most cost-effective method. Opting to pay at the airport check-in desk can result in costs up to 25 percent higher than online rates. Travelers are advised to verify their specific ticket allowance to avoid unexpected fees at the gate.
