The Finnish cosmetics brand Lumene, named after Lake Lummenne in Kuhmoinen, was established in 1970 as part of the pharmaceutical company Orion-yhtymä. The brand quickly achieved market leadership in Finland, a position it still holds. Lumene's original blue and silver color combination symbolized Finnishness and Nordic nature.

The brand's growth continued internationally in the 1980s with exports to Sweden. The 1990s saw the launch of the first comprehensive body care range, Body Aktiva, and the haircare brand Cutrin became part of Lumene Group in 1991. During the 2000s, Lumene received recognition in European consumer studies, and the company was re-established as Lumene Oy in 2005 as a privately owned entity.

In recent decades, Lumene Group has focused on sustainability, launching the WaterSmart program and publishing its first sustainability report in 2019. The sustainability strategy has been based on circular economy principles since 2020. The company has also expanded internationally, now owning Swedish brand IDA WARG Beauty and Finnish haircare brand Promise.

In 2024, Lumene Group was certified as a B Corporation, and in 2025, Swedish investment firm Creades became a minority owner. The company aims to continue its international growth and modernize its Espoo production facility with an investment exceeding €10 million.
