Lumo Kodit Survey: Rental Housing and Additional Services Interest Residents

A survey conducted by Lumo Kodit Oyj in April 2021, with nearly 4,000 respondents, revealed a strong preference for renting and high satisfaction with this housing choice. The study highlights that residents are placing greater importance on additional services that enhance living comfort.

Particularly, well-equipped outdoor areas and private parking spots emerged as highly desired amenities. Families prioritized courtyard facilities, while couples and other families valued parking. Retirees expressed a desire for minor renovation and cleaning services. Digital security features and communal spaces also ranked highly among respondents.

Approximately one-third of those surveyed, especially individuals under 34, showed interest in ecological housing services. These included options like individual apartment temperature control and parcel lockers. The survey reinforces the rising popularity of rental living in Finland, with only 15% of respondents planning to purchase a home in the next three years. Satisfaction with renting is partly attributed to its perceived freedom and ease compared to homeownership.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on housing preferences was also evident. Many respondents desired more space and improved facilities for remote work. The importance of private balconies or yards, along with proximity to recreational opportunities, also increased. Older residents and families with children emphasized the role of community and familiarity in fostering a sense of security.
