MacOS 26 updates system dictionary features
Apple has expanded its dictionary collection in macOS 26, adding nine new titles and updating existing content for the system's lookup tool.

With the release of macOS 26, codenamed Tahoe, Apple has updated its native dictionary application. While the software version remains unchanged from previous iterations, the database has been expanded to include 85 free dictionaries. This includes nine new entries and updates to 19 existing files.
Content growth is most notable in the New Oxford American Dictionary and the Cantonese-English dictionary, which received significant entry additions. Other resources, such as the Duden dictionary, remain at 2020 content levels, though minor translation updates have been applied. These dictionaries are also available for use across iOS and iPadOS 26.
From a technical perspective, the application remains backward-compatible with legacy plug-ins, as the core versioning has not shifted since macOS Big Sur. However, Apple has migrated the file storage location for these assets within the system architecture, which is a notable change for power users managing local dictionary data.
