Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced detailed instructions for deploying Magma, an open-source software solution for mobile core networks. This offering enables the development and operation of cloud-native mobile core networks, allowing for implementation within AWS data centers, customer-owned premises (on-premises), and at the network's edge.

The Magma solution aims to support new business models and enhance the agility of mobile network management. It is particularly suited for private networks, fixed wireless access, and edge computing use cases. Magma is designed to extend network access to remote and sparsely populated areas, aiding the digital transformation in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and agriculture.

Magma is an open-source software project governed by a neutral framework under the Linux Foundation. The technology is already in production, with examples including AccessParks providing broadband to US National Parks using Magma, and Brisanet Telecommunications extending connectivity to remote areas in Brazil.

The guidance provided in the AWS blog post focuses on deploying the Magma core network on AWS Cloud using Magma Cloudstrapper. It does not cover Radio Access Network (RAN) or end-device requirements. Magma aligns with 3GPP's Evolved Packet Core (EPC) specifications for LTE core network implementations, offering a flexible foundation for modern mobile networks.
